Entrepreneurship factors that influence performance of micro and small business

Abstract

This research examines whether certain entrepreneurial factors may influence the performance of micro and small businesses, analyzing the personal features of the entrepreneur and the initial characteristics of the organization. Since there is no single theory that explains the performance of small and medium size businesses (SME in Spanish), the resource based theory and the entrepreneurship typology underpin the theoretical framework. The methodology used is based upon a questionnaire applied to 192 retail and service businesses with two to fifteen employees with less than a twenty-year life in Mexico City. This research analyzes and compares the characteristics of those companies that have survived for more than three years and those with less than three years of operations. None of the proposed factors have a significant influence on the performance but some factors are starting to have some correlation.
